About Mirlo Volador
Mirlo Volador is a free, browser-based game that reimagines the classic arcade bird-flying genre with modern hand-tracking technology. Instead of tapping a screen or pressing keys, you control a flying blackbird using nothing but your hand and your device's camera.
The name explained: "Mirlo" is Spanish for blackbird, and "volador" means flying. Together, Mirlo Volador celebrates the simple joy of guiding a bird through the sky using the most natural controller of all: your own hand.
Our Mission
We believe gaming should be accessible, intuitive, and fun. Traditional game controllers create barriers: they cost money, require learning complex button layouts, and assume specific physical abilities. Mirlo Volador removes these barriers entirely.
Our mission is to demonstrate that compelling gameplay does not require expensive hardware or complicated setup. Anyone with a web browser and a camera can play instantly, for free, without downloading anything or creating an account.
How It Works
Mirlo Volador uses cutting-edge machine learning technology to detect your hand position in real-time. Here's what happens when you play:
- Camera capture: Your device's camera captures video frames as you play.
- Hand detection: A machine learning model identifies your hand and tracks 21 key points (landmarks) including your fingertips, knuckles, and wrist.
- Motion mapping: The vertical position of your hand is translated into the bird's altitude. Raise your hand, the bird flies up. Lower it, the bird descends.
- Local processing: All of this happens entirely in your browser. Your camera feed is never recorded, stored, or sent to any server.
The result is a control scheme that feels natural and immediate. There's no abstraction between your intention and the action on screen. You move your hand, the bird moves with it.
Technology Stack
Mirlo Volador is built with modern web technologies that enable high-performance gaming directly in the browser:
Privacy First
Privacy is not an afterthought at Mirlo Volador; it's a core design principle. We built the game with these commitments:
- Camera data stays local: Your camera feed is processed entirely in your browser using WebAssembly and WebGL. No video, images, or hand-tracking data ever leaves your device.
- No account required: You can play the full game without creating a profile or sharing any personal information.
- Minimal data collection: If you choose to join the leaderboard, we only collect your chosen username, auto-detected country, and game scores. No email, no password, no personal identification.
- Easy deletion: You can delete your profile and all associated data at any time with one click from the in-game profile screen.
For complete details, read our Privacy Policy.
Accessibility
Hand-tracking gaming opens doors for players who may struggle with traditional controllers:
- No hardware to buy: Any device with a camera works. No gamepad, keyboard, or specialized equipment needed.
- One-hand play: The game requires only one hand, making it playable by people with use of only one arm.
- Large movements work: You don't need fine motor precision. Simple up-and-down hand movements are all that's required.
- No button memorization: The control is intuitive: hand up means bird up. There's nothing to learn or remember.
We're committed to making Mirlo Volador playable by as many people as possible and welcome feedback on how to improve accessibility further.
The Global Leaderboard
Competition makes games more engaging. Mirlo Volador features a real-time global leaderboard where players from around the world compete for the highest scores. When you create a free pilot profile:
- Your best score is automatically saved and ranked.
- Your country flag appears next to your name (auto-detected, not stored beyond display).
- You can see how you stack up against players worldwide.
- All scores are legitimate, as the game runs server-validated scoring.
Creating a profile is optional. You can enjoy the full game experience without ever joining the leaderboard.
Open Development
Mirlo Volador is continuously improved based on player feedback and advances in web technology. We regularly publish articles on our blog about the technology behind the game, tips for improving your score, and the future of gesture-controlled gaming.
